My impressions of Kolkata (India)

posted in: India, Travels | 4

Hi everyone,

A few years ago I spent a few exciting days in Kolkata (India). As I grew up with plenty of Indian influences (a lot of music and movies) in Tehran, visiting India was like a childhood dream come true.

I arrived on New Years Eve and from the first day on my dear friend Priyanka was so wonderful to show us around her home town and introduce lovely places, local customs, fine drinks and food :).

First we had to buy a proper Indian Sari …

They do have great selections of garments and colours in shops all around Kolkata.

I was also made up to fit the dress.

Pryanka invited us to her family home where her mum prepared a fantastic and delicious Bengali feast. I was so taken away by the smell, flavours and the appearance of the meal that I completely forgot to take my own pictures at the time. This original picture was taken by Nandinissaha.

Another highlight was a weekend trip from Kolkata to the southern tip of West Bengal on a mission to spot a man eating tiger ;).

This old but cosy Indian “cruise” ship was our home for a couple of nights. It took us on river channels to mangrove swamps and the tiger reserve of the Sundarbans National Park :).

In the end I didn’t spot a tiger (but it more likely had its eyes on me ;). But I saw plenty of other animals and hundreds of cheeky monkeys.

Have never been in India. Your pics would fit for a traveler guide my dear! Thanks for sharing!

    • Thank you so much. I am glad you like my photos, but really these pics don’t do justice to this great city.

  2. How was the food? India’s known for spicy food, right? 🙂
I think it’s fun to stay in the “cruise” ship since it can bring you around the country and you’ll see more of the outskirts compared to if you travel on land.

    • I’ve always thought Indian food was good until I’ve eaten at my Indian friend’s place. She is from Bengal and her mum prepared us a few delicious dishes. Uhhh I tell you, it was fantastic. You have to try it once you’ve got the chance. The food we got in Kolkata was actually not hot at all.. You’re right traveling by sea is really fun! XX
